VM guest file corrupted after VM server halt

Dear All,

The VM server has been halted and after restarted, some guest file such as excel file in the VM have been corrupted.

After check in Vcenter, the VM need to Virtual machine Consolidation, can the guest file (Corrupted) can be recovered after consolidation?  or any other action we can take?   Many Thanks.

Hi,

please, backup the vm folder before proceeding.

After that, make a distinction:

1) "virtual machine consolidation needed" status means that there were files left that could not be merged when deleting snapshots has been processed.   Ensure there is enough disk space (!) and run "Consolidate", see here. 

2) After 1) has been proceeded successfully, proceed with the inner vm fixing e.g. chkdsk /f /r and sfc /scannow .

Collect the activities log e.g. vCenter logs, vm log, event viewer logs of the vm.
