Hi,
I hoping someone out there has some information regarding V2P vmware conversion. I found a pdf with step-by-step instructions (http://www.vmware.com/support/v2p/doc/V2P_TechNote.pdf) but they're from 2004 & don't support newer OS's. Does anyone know of any updated docs on this? My goal is to convert a virtual W2K8 R2 64-bit server to a physical IBM HS21 blade server, reason being is that I'm having trouble installing server 2008 on the blade itself (keeps bsod'ing) & would like to try to convert the vm over.
Thanks,
Abdul
The issues you are having installing Win2K8 on the phyiscal blade is most likely due to missing drivers, are you using IBM's standard install routine?
a V2V of a guest to this physical machine will still suffer from the issues you are experiancing, and there would be serveral other issues relating to missing drivers etc.
I'm sure it is a driver problem, but I don't even get far enough to be prompted for a 3rd-party driver disk. The install BSODs just before that. The weird thing is, this specific blade used to have server 2003 on it before I converted it to a vm guest 2 years ago. Now I'm trying to install 2008 on it, but I keep hitting that same wall. So I was hoping the converter would get me to a point where I could get the OS installed & then worry about drivers later.
Use Dell AppAssure trial and make sure you prepare all necessary drivers (especially for SCSI controller).
Have a read of the following www.vmware.com/support/v2p/ for a bit of advice. also Platespin off the ability to V2P out of the box. used this to P2P a couple of servers in a project a short while ago.
Yeah, that's where I got the pdf link that I put in my original post. I was going through it & got stuck on some files it was asking for that don't exist for server 2008. Since the pdf is from 2004 it doesn't have anything about server 2008 so I stopped there & started this post hoping for some ideas on how to proceed. I'm gonna try dell's appassure. I downloaded the trial version & am attending a live demo this afternoon. Hopefully it'll get me going in the right direction.
When you did the P2P conversion, what OS did you convert over?
