Using vmware-vmupgrade.exe to upgrade multiple VMTools

I recently upgraded to VC2.0.2 and ESX3.0.2 which were both minor upgrades to my environment since I was just already using 2.0.1 and 3.0.1. While reading the upgrade procedures within the vi3 installation guide, I proceded to try "Upgrading Hardware and VMware Tools in Multiple Virtual Machines". I moved my VMs around so that I could safely power off all VMs which all resided on one host. Following the instructions, I ran the cmd from VC and it appeared to upgrade the few VMs as expected, powering them on and then back off. Reviewing the realtime time displays everything was updated successfully, however when I now manually power on those VMs, the VMTools isnt the latest and they are marked as out of date in VC. Were my expectations that this would update VMTools in mass (or against those you specify by cmd) for VMs incorrect? Do I really have to open VMTools on each and upgrade manually (which does requires a reboot)?
