Unable to install VMtools in Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 5) error unregister_netdevice: waiting for eth0 to become free

When I try running the vmware-config-tools.pl script, I get the error:

: unregister_netdevice: waiting for eth0 to become free

We have tried this but still no go.

We modified modules.conf and het netconf, but ipv6 is still in the kernel and doing the VMware tools update still yields the same error and requires a power cycle.

We have made the changes and powered cycled the server, same result.

Any ideas who be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

Hello,

Before installing VMware Tools shutdown all networking applications and even the network. It will try to do this but if something has it locked open it may not work. Does 'ifdown eth0' work?
