Thin Provisioned by mistake?

Is it possible to deploy a new VM from a template (ESX 3.5i using virtual centre 2.5) as a thin provisioned disk by mistake?

We just ran into a situation where a new server was deployed from a template (using the dropdown "deploy virtual machine from this template") some time ago.

Later when the template was deleted, it was discovered that the base disk for the new virtual machine was pointing to the base disk of the template. Since the base disk was deleted, we have now lost the VM that was deployed from it.

This actually appears to have happened once previously and we were unable to determine what happened in that instance eather. I don't see a way that a template can be deployed "thin" from the normal VC GUI.

It cant from the VC GUI. However, it can if you ever tried/used Lab Manager/Stage manager to create it.
