TSO offload support on virtualized Intel 1000 network adapter in VM guest OS?

is it possible to use TSO offload funcionality of Intel 1000 adapter in VM guest OS?

As per http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1001805, TSO is only supported with vmxnet driver based vNICs:

The virtual network adapter is using the vmxnet driver.

If offloading functionality is important, why not use vmxnet3 in the first place?
