Slow Windows 2003 R2 file server on ESX 2.5

Folks, we have a 2003 R2 file server which was running fine until we moved a number of Access databases to the server. Now the CPU runs at 100% from 8AM until just after 5PM every work day.

Task manager shows that the system process runs at 70% + during this time. Other processes are lsass and various other system components.

Normal file access (ie opening word/excel, browsing drives) is OK - a little slower than normal. But Access database operations are very slow. Opening a database takes a lot longer and a query that used to take 20 seconds now takes over 5 minutes. Most of these databases are frontend MDE files hosted on the PC with the backend MDB file on the file server.

We have disabled oplocks, set the AV to ignore MDB/MDE in realtime and changed the MaxFreeConnections/MinFreeConnections .... but still the CPU runs at 100%.

Has anyone seen this before? And more importantly, found a resolution! Thanks in advance
