Shrinking cold a VM under ESX 3 with spaces

Hello,

I´d like to know how can i shrink/convert the hard disk file of a VM with the name Windows 2003 R2 Standard.vmdk in the service console of ESX 3 (file size 20 GB). Great will be 2 GB files as a result for a future file transfer.

Thanks in advance.

vmkfstools is able to do this

vmkfstools -i Windows\ 2003\ R2\ Standard.vmdk -d 2gbsparse dest.vmdk

this creates a split and "compressed" vmdk named dest

dest.vmdk is NOT usable in ESX itself

Does that mean that spaces are not possible in the file name "Windows 2003 R2 Standard.vmdk" ?

You can have spaces in the filename without any problems.

When you start typing the name of the file and press tab, you'll get this layout.

I think you might be able to put the filename in quotes also.

Since the COS is a *nix OS you need to escape spaces with a backslash.
