Setting up a home VMWare lab for the first time.

Hello,

I am new to VMWare.  I have currently been using Oracle Virtuabox and wanted to try something different.   I want to set up a virtual home lab for study purposes and this is what I need:

1 Windows 2008 R2 Server configured as a DHCP server

1 Windows 7 client

I want these two to be able to talk to eachother on their own virtual subnet outside of my private physical subnet.  I want the two virtual machines to be able to access the internet as well.

My physical router is configured at 192.168.1.254

1.  Is this possible to do?

2.  If so, what version of VMWare do I need installed, there are quite a few to choose from, Server, Workstation, EXSI.. etc..

3.  Are there any guides to help with the setup?

Cheers,

None

Hi,

That is certainly possible.  The version of VMware is up to you, and actually you could use several/all at the same time.  The easiest route is to use AutoLab - http://professionalvmware.com/2012/05/vsphere-5-autolab/ or build this on your own if you want more experience setting up.  Basically install VMware player and install ESXi instead as a VM.  Another useful blog post can be found here:  http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2012/06/12/creating-a-nested-lab/
