Removing Independant disk status

I have a 4 disk server that has the 'Independant mode' status checked on the 4th disk, preventing a successfull backup by esXpress. I have not been able to determine fromt he manuals what the effect of deselecting 'Independant mode' has on that particular disk or the data on it. I suspect that nothing will happen, but if anyone has any experience with this, it would be good to hear.
