Reducing VMDK image

I've searched, and did not find answers relevant to my problem.

I'm running a generic turnkey linux apppliance, with Xampp installed coming in at 1.3GB. Excluding the websites I have running within it, the installation is about 1GB with vmwaretools installed.

The turnkey core image is less than 200MB, and though I've installed a few utilites like MC, there is roughly an 800MB gap there. I need to get this shrunk way down. I had to install larger packages like the linux headers to get vmwaretools to install, and vmwaretools is no small package either.

First, do I even need vmwaretools? The VM appliance is CLI only, and is managed as well as accessed via http & ssh from outside the VM.

Second, if I do need vmwaretools, what packages must I absolutely keep to keep it working.

Third, WTH does vmwaretools do for this kind of installation anyway?

I've run commands on the guest end to fill in the FS with zeros, and defragged, the compacted the image. The image size is very consistant with what I see in df -h, any further reductions will have to come from the OS itself.

Thanks.
