Precautions to take before removing vCPU from a VM

Hello Friends,

I know this might be a silly thing to ask, but i believe it is worth asking and nothing harm in it.

I have a VM which is critical for me, it is running an application which is very important. It is having 3 vCPUs assigned to it, I want to remove one of them to keep 2 vCPUs.

Now my question is, is there anything which i need to keep in mind or need to take any precautions. Coz i dont wanna have any issues after decreseaing to 2vCPUs. Ofcourse i will do it by shutdown the VM.

Kindly suggest me friends. Thanks in Advance.

It is a Windows server?  I have removed vCPUs many times without any problems.  You will not need to modify the HAL as you are still using multiprocessor, which is the only thing I worry about with Windows Server 2003.

If you are paranoid there is no harm in making a clone of the VM before you make changes.

Before Windows Vista (and 2008) the issue is when you change between uni (only 1 vCPU) and multiprocessor (more than 1 vCPU) HAL.

But in your case you seems to stay to multiprocessor... so you got not issues.
