Both Andre an Awo are correct in their answers. the reason for this is that all VMware is doing from theGuest OS'es point of view is providing the VM. to provide more partiton's you could either precent another VMDK to the Guest machine, thereby making the OS think that there was a second HDD, or if you have the space on HDD presented to XP used tool like gparted or partition magic to modify the partiton structure from within the guest itself

If you mean disk partitions (to have more volumes), then the answer is yes.

You can build more partition on a single vmdk, but also (and I suggest this way) create more vmdk, each with a single disk partition.

You can't create a partition inside a guest with VMWare itself. VMWare just provices the (virtual) disk or raw device. Creating the partition must be done with the guest OS or appropriate tools.
