Oracle RAC in VM?

We are considering creating an Oracle RAC cluster in our ESX 3.0.1 infrastructure. For those who are using RAC on VMWare:

1. What issues did you encounter?

2. Are there any "best practice" guides available?

3. Would you recommend running RAC on VMware?

Any insight is greatly appreciated

Jeff

Oracle RACK is unsupported.

This doesn't mean it doesn't work.

I would prefer Oracle database and failsafe. This is supported also on MSCS.

The main problem we had was time synchronisations of the linux vm's.

We gave up due to this.

Didn't you set the ntp server in the linux vm?

If you don't reach it may be you have some firewall on.

Check ntp ports between clients and server.

Let me know

We are running Oracle Rac "across boxes" on RHEL Linux on 2.5.3 with RDM.

I have followed the recommendations for MSCS for the VMware setup and it has ran for over one year now.

I don't know much about the Oracle side of the setup.

Now the time has come to move to ESX3.01 but I don't know how to proceed. I would prefer the migration to go without downtime but don't know how...

That's how I found this thread Smiley Happy

You can find as many guides and info as you want on Oracle site:

Example:

I don't have experience on that.

There is a step by step article for 10g RAC on Linux using VMWare server located at http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/chan-ubl-vmware.html. Contains links that allow you to download the key components.

good article from technet. We have been running Oracle databases as virtuals and that works great but have not yet looked at 10G with RAC.
