Novell Netware

Hi,

I am very much new to VMWare

I am using Windows 2000 as my desktop. I have installed VMW6 and inside that I have installed Novell-Netware 6.5.

Now not able to ping to the host. Also host is not able to ping to the Novell-Server.

I have tried Bridged, NAT, Host only.

Do you have the driver installed correctly in NW under VM6?

Does your NW server have static IP or DHCP assigned?

NW is having static ip address.

I put the gateway as the address of the VMWare network card address, which is again a static address.

Are you using Bridged, NAT or Host only? which one have you decided to use?

If you set Bridged then your gateway should be the LAN router, If you use the NAT then the GW is the virtual gateway that VMware Wks creates, you can find this from the VMware utility.

If you use HOst only then the gateway is your host machine.

IT has been a long time ago I had configured a NW6 server in Workstation but I remember I didn't have any problems.

Check your subnet mask is correct.

Thanks for all the answers.

My plan is

One desktop machine into Novell Netware 6.5 server. (Test1) 192.168.10.2

One Laptop (Windows 2000 client) can able to connect to the server. 192.168.10.20

VMWare workstation 6.0 in the Laptop having a Novell Netware 6.5 backup-server. (Test2) 192.168.10.3, vmbridge(192.168.10.21), vmnat(192.168.10.22)

I want to test the RSync

Please guide me to get it done.

The easiest way to network and connect all the 3 computers together is as below:

(Test1) 192.168.10.2

Win2KPro) 192.168.10.20

(Test2) 192.168.10.3 running in a VM on laptop.

Since your private network is 192.168.10.xx and (presumably using 255.255.255.0 subnet mask and GW 192.168.0.254), make sure the Laptop which is running VM Wks is also on the same network 192,168.10.xx with 255.255.255.0.

Set the NIC on Test2 VM server to bridged and provided you have configured the Netware server in the VM correctly in terms of network settings it should be visible to all the machines.

One thing I remembered is if you haven't installed the VMtools networking does not work. Check if you followed the procedure described on page 130 of the Wks user guide http://www.vmware.com/pdf/ws6_manual.pdf

As per the document I hope it needs a Virtual Switch.

How to do it ???

Can I download it.

GW is your gateway which is your router. If you don't have a router on in your test setup you can leave it blank. You may need to create a hosts file on each of the machine with IP/name details of all the machines.

Fine - Thank You.

In my test plan I have one-desktop-pc and one-laptop connected via straight-cable.

Where I must create the host file.

Laptop - Windows 2000 Professional.(192.168.10.20/255.255.255.0)

VMWare - Novel Netware 6.5 (Test2-192.168.10.4/255.255.255.0)

VMNet1 - DHCP 192.168.10/255.255.255.0(BRIDGED)

Desktop-PC - Novell Netware 6.5(Test1-192.168.10.2/255.255.255.0)

Not able to ping

Laptop-Test2.

Test1 - Test2. ViceVersa

Can Ping

Test1-Laptop ViceVersa

Laptop-VMNet1-Bridged

So guide me in the above scenario.

Thanks & Regards.

Your setup:

Laptop - Windows 2000 Professional.(192.168.10.20/255.255.255.0)

VMWare - Novel Netware 6.5 (Test2-192.168.10.4/255.255.255.0)

VMNet1 - DHCP 192.168.10/255.255.255.0(BRIDGED)

Desktop-PC - Novell Netware 6.5(Test1-192.168.10.2/255.255.255.0)

\----

Laptop is running VM Workstation with a VM configured with Netware Server Test2.

How is the VM network configured is it set to Bridged?

Why are you using the VMNet1 which is DHCP virtual network. This is used when you are using HOST ONLY networking in your VM to issue DHCP address and route to the host PC NIC.

Because you are using BRIDGED, you must not use the VMNet1. In the Ethernet properties of your VM deselect the Custom: Specific Network where you have selected VMNet0.

Change the settings and test.

If I use "Bridged" network I am not able to ping from

192.168.10.20 (Laptop - Win2000) to

192.168.10.4 (Test2, Server) also from

192.168.10.2 (Test1, Server)

Thanks
