NICs dissapeared in ESX

I setup 2 hosts in ESX Server 3.5.0, 64607 and installed Windows 2008 Enterprise. I am planning to setup Windows Failover Cluster on these machines.

After I configured 2 NICs: Public and Privated, shut both machines down and turn them back on, one of the NIC dissapears and instead I see the default one, i.e. Local Area Connectioon 2 without any IP Address configuration. When I try to setup TCP/IP I get an error saying that NIC with this name already exist. Even if I name differently I get another error saying about existing IP Address.

Any help appreciated.

Hello,

Moved to Virtual Machine and GUest OS forum.

Please review http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/vi3_35_25_u1_mscs.pdf for assistance with this. Pay close attention to the examples as they contain quite a bit of data.

Best regards,

Are you using RDMs for the cluster? If so you need to create them before configuring any network settings.

Reason being that when the new SCSI bus is created in the process of adding the RDM, the NICs PCI position is changed and all the network settings are lost because windows thinks it is a new NIC.

No, I don't use Raw Disk Mappings. All my disks are virtual. On Friday I setup Failover Cluster completely.

This morning when I shutdown box VMs and went to settings my shared hard drives dissapeared. I had a feeling that I am screwed again.

I've re-created bosks on both VMs again and turn one on. As I thought one of my NIC was gone.

Here is the link to a KB that will help detail the PCI mapping for you.
