Migration of server environment - from physical servers to VMware - questions..

We have a server environment with about 30 servers, where all other then 2 are physical(VMs are only performing ERP batch jobs). As we are currently in an outsourcing agreement which is about to end, we have set up a brand new server environment in a datacenter close to where we are. We have invested in 4 Dell R805 with an Dell EqualLogic PS5000xv SAN, along with 3 Dell R300 (non-virtual servers). We have purchased VMware Infrastructure 3 Enterprise for our new virtual environment. Our new environment has already been set up according to Dells and VMwares Best practise.

Our "problem" is that our old and new environment are isolated from eachother, as we will use the same IP subnet in the new environment. We also don't have any communication set up between the two data centres. We will keep all servers, servername and IPs - but will place most of the servers in our VMware environment. All our offices are on different subnets, so we could put a temporary server here - which will have communcation with the current environment.

This operation opens up quite a few questions:

  • Active Directory - we have two physical AD servers today, where the main server also have the following roles - DNS, DHCP, CA. What's the best way to get this into our new environment? (We will use one vm AD and one physical machine)

  • SQL - We have 8 SQL servers in our current environment and we do plan to place them all in our clustered VMware environment. Should be simply P2V these machines or set up a new VM, install SQL and perform a "normal" migration?

  • Exchange 2007 - Same as with SQL. We are to place this as a VM.

  • SharePoint & SCCM 2007 - same thing as above - migrating from Physical to virtual.

We will initially migrate everything in order to get the new environment up and running - so that we can test it. Once tested and approved, we will make a final migration of files and databases and then reroute the traffic from all our offices to our new datacentre.
