Memory Problem with SLES11

Since 1 week im deploying SLES11 virtual machine on our infrastructure for replacing old SLES 9 VM. The SLES11 template is configurated with the VMI Kernel ( 2.6.27.19-5-vmi smp)

We use Vmware ESXi 3.5.0 - 176894

I also activated the VMI paravirtualization in each SLES11 VM and installed the VMware Tools. The problem is the 9/10 of the SLES11 virtual machines are noticed as in "lack of memory" (90 % used) although there is nothing running into the VM. When i look into the SLES11 Virtual Machine on the system monitor the ram is used like 26% / 30 % maximum.

It seems to be a bug into the Vmware VI Client interface ? console ? someone has already saw a problem like that ?

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

WIthin SLES11 how are you determine a lack of memory? Is this reported in the logs, if so which log, also what reported it. Even though you are not running an 'application' per say, many things are running within the VM in general.

The problem is : in SLES11 there is no lack of memory (see the system monitor screenshot here) about 26% used

But the Vmware monitor performance says there is a lack of memory (see the screenshot) about 80 % used ...

Any idea ?

Thanks.

Having exactly the same problem. Tried both VMI and PAE kernel, maybe worth trying XEN ?:|

Hi,

have a look with top or free with CLI and attach that in your next post.

The reported value with VI-Client is guest memory usage and that is common to linux to be in the range of 80% due to buffer cache usage.

best regards

Erich

Hi,

I never tried XEN but maybe it worth the try ... VMware bug or just the VMI Kernel implementation which have some problems ?

For stgepopp : just have a look on theses screens.

The VM has just been restarted yesterday, so the memory problem can't be noticed for the moment..

But you can see VMware show 50 % used, the top and free command give 90% used and the system monitor show only 30 % are used.

Any Idea ?
