MS Sxchange 2003 occasionally stop processing outgoing email

We are periodically experiencing an issue where the MS Exchange 2003 email queues occasionally stop processing outgoing email for 5 to 6 hours. The MS Exchange 2003 server is a vm, latest tools, running on ESX 3.0.2, build 94070.

Environment:

Exchange email server 2003 sp2 (vm)

Novell connector for GroupWise and Exchange (vm)

GroupWise 7.1 (In a Novell 3-node Cluster - Physical)

The Exchange email queues occasionally stop processing outgoing email for 5 to 6 hours.)

During this time, incoming email is received.

Email sent to GroupWise system over the connector is received.

Cannot ping from this server to outside mail domains. yahoo.com; hotmail.com, gmail.com, etc.

Can do a ns lookup to those email domains from this server.

The event viewer shows no errors.

The cpu usage is low.

Server has been rebooted.

The mail queues begin sending messages out after 5 or 6 hours.

We have contacted Microsoft, but they do not support MS Exchange running on VMWare, and we do not have Premeire support. Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of a situation like this.
