Lost Admin Password

I restored a VM using esXpress and not only is the VM off the domain, but I cannot log in with the local Admin account.

Do I treat the VM just like a physical box when hacking in, or is there a better way to gain access?

Exactly like a phisical box.

With a third party tools if it's a Windows VM

Restarting in rescue mode or using a LIVE CD if is a Linux VM
