Is it just me...??

Hi All,

I'm wondering if it is just me (or my way of working) but why is it so hard to find information on the VMware site?

Example:

I read the previously offered links on VM filename extensions and somewhere in there it mentions that *.vmem as a file only exists if you use mainMem.useNamedFile = "true".

OK. so I'd like to read up on this particular parameter (and possibly in the process dig up a list/description of other parameters possible).

As it turns out: fat chance

search vmware.com (entire site) on mainmem.usenamedfile : 1 blog entry

refining the search isn't going to help, is it??

Back to my question:

Why is it so hard to get this kind of detailed information from the site?

Surely this (parameters etc.) is information that is documented for a product range like VMware, or is this level of detail only something I have gotten spoiled with during my MCT life??

Curious (and dissapointed)

Curious to reasons, background and above all solutions/options.

Regards,

That's a hotly disputed topic right now in another thread. Currently VMware does not release any VMX file parameter documentation publicly. If you call support they will give you some of these parameters if it will help with your issue. There thoughts are that alot of these parameters can be damaging if not used properly. You'll notice you can Add Rows when you set parameters in the VM settings but you cannot delete them (of course you can edit the vmx file directly and delete). A couple users like Ulli have gone out on there own and documented these parameters.

No it is not just you...

There is a ongoing / repeatedly upcoming discussion regarding better documentation from VMware.

Pheww,

Relieved it's not just me.

Dissapointed about the 'attitude' from a company that proports to throw out state-of-the-art Enterpise level products.!

Good, well concieved detailed documentation on the possibilities IMHO negates (to a large extent) the 'risk' of misuse.

On the contrary, it will leverage the right-measured deployement and use of the products, unless these type of parameters are implemented in a 'cross-your-fingers' type manner, which would be really a bad thing for such products. (No offence intended)

Grateful for the pointers and the tedious work others must have put in.

Thanks guys.
