Hello Gurus!,
I have an esx server with 4 virtual machines, and the server has two physical NIC's , each in a seperate virtual switch.
I have all the 4 VM's in a single virtual switch currently (i had all the 4 VM's in both the vswitches, but removed them for testing) , but none of them are able to ping the other...any ideas?.
thanks for the help!
Before removing one of the switch VM are able to ping..?
just check edit settings of VM for network adapter..is the Virtual Machine Network Portgroup name is mentioned correctly?
Is the windows firewall enabled on the servers?
Is the vswitch connected to your physical network?
Are you able to ping anything from your virtual servers out on the physical network?
Are you able to ping the virtual servers from a physical machine?
It is hard to say what the problem is. Do some further testing.
Hello,
As long as each VM is attached to the vSwitch or the same portgroup within the vSwitch they should be able to ping each other.
Are you assuming that a vSwitch will provide DHCP addresses? If so this is a mistake. You have to have your own DHCP server.
I would run ipconfig/all on each system and determine if the networking you have setup even allows you to ping or do anything on the network.
This sounds like a windows issue more than a virtual switch issue.
Best regards,

Thanks very much. All the VM's are connected to the same portgropu and also connected to the same vswitch but they were not able to ping each other.
I realised that it had to d something with windows itself, (it was w2k8), disabled all the firewall, and it seemed to work!!. I have more testing to do today..and let you folks know if something comes up.
thanks!!
