Does anyone here use Intersystems Cache database server in a VM?
We have just virtualized one and are having issues with the amount of resources its needing.
thanks
I don't have an answer, but I did get a red flag from my vendor today that Cache is a CPU hog when run under VMware. From InterSystems: "In multi-user tests, CPU load is typically twice as great (200%) of the same tests run on the same operating system natively (i.e. without VMware) on the same hardware."
http://www.intersystems.com/support/cflash/2007announce.html
The Cache application here is using almost no CPU on its current (two-year-old) hardware, so we're going to try moving it to VM anyway.

Yes we do!
With "small" customers we have no problems, but we don't know what is happening when we are doing the job with "large" customers. I've just opened a ticket wit Intersystems but there are not clear at all:
Hi support,
What is current status of the problems with Caché Implementations on VMware? (this message is dated
from march)
"March 11, 2007 InterSystems Products and VMware Virtualization Software
InterSystems has determined in benchmark and customer testing that VMware environments running
Caché and Ensemble require significantly greater CPU capacity than native installations on the same
hardware. In multi-user tests, CPU load is typically twice as great (200%) of the same tests run on the
same operating system natively (i.e. without VMware) on the same hardware. Additionally, there are
application specific implications for response time for interactive jobs.
InterSystems, along with a number of its customers, have reported this problem to VMware and VMware
is investigating. For updates on the status, please contact VMware Global Alliance team.
This affects all versions of all InterSystems products. Until a solution is available from VMware,
InterSystems recommends that any customers contemplating a VMware deployment
Ensure that available CPU capacity is at least twice as large as a native installation and
Conduct application specific testing to ascertain what, if any, response time impact will be
noticed by users.
Please contact InterSystems Worldwide Response Center (WRC) before deploying Caché or Ensemble on
VMware.

From my opinion Intersystems is the first who know if there is some progression with the
investigation of the problems on VMware... For me it's a little bit confusing that Intersystems asked me to
contact VMware. I submit the question at VMware

Hi x
I just had a chance to ask my manager, and there has been no changes or updates here. Apparently
VMWare is conducting some investigation to find a solution to this, and you may be able to inquire
with them for more information.
Thanks,
We are looking to deploy Intersystems Cache Dbase too.
Does anyone have any up to date tips / tricks?
Sounds like for high loads we need to double RAM, CPU, and place the Dbase's HD on a seprate and LUN that only it has access too.
thank you in advance!
