I had a problem. I fixed it but I could have done it faster!?!
You know how you can look into a zipped up folder and 'see' the files zipped up within; maybe even delete and edit them 'in situ'.
Well, I'd like to do the same with the VMDK file. So that I can replace a missing or broken dll etc...
Can this be done with Workstation 5.5 or Server 1.0.3 already w/o having to mount a drive or start up a host? Would this feature even be logically possible?
You can do it using the VMware mount tools or Ken Kato's vdk.
With vdk this should be even possible without an installation of WS or Server (I never tested this).
Without any of the mount tools you can't do it,

You could of course download the VMDK specs and write such a tool

Power off the vm that you want to replace a file. Power down a 2nd helper server that you will use that has the good copy of the file(s) you want to replace. Attach the first vmdk as a 2nd disk to your helper server and power up the helper server. You can now work on the file structure of the server you want to modify.
