How to increase C: on Windows 2003 ? Standard partition.

Hi,

We start to have too small C: on some VM running Windows 2003 server.

With vmkfstools, it 's easy to increase the vmdk with :

vmkfstool -X sizeG pathofvmdk.

But on windows 2003 how to increase C: to use this new disk space ( standard partition ) ?

Diskpart does not work on system partition ( standard or dynamique partition ).

Is there third party tool which is able to increase C: on Windows 2003 ?

Thanks.

There are many posts and options on this.

IMHO the easiest way to do this in Windows is to reattach the C: system disc to another VM of the same OS service pack level. You'll then see the C: drive as 😧 or whatever. Then run diskpar from there - it will work because it's not a system drive. When you are finished reattach it to the original VM. Done this many times - never failed. If you are a cautious man - run the method on a copy of the drive.

If you move your page file off the C drive and mount the C drive on a helper VM you can use diskpart on the helper vm to increase the size of the disk. It works great!

Thank you for this idea.

Move C on an other VM. Dispart on this other VM. Move back to my first VM.

OK.

I'll check whether this works, always interested in new object  but  I once used partition software to increate the OS partition in VM, it is the same as in a physical hard drive, very quickly, both the SW and the article are very helpful. extend C: on win 2003 vmware
