This post is just from curiosity more than anything else.
Suppose you have an ESX 3.5 server and you accidentally tell one of your VMs to hibernate rather than restart. This hasn't happened or I would already had my answer. But it occured to me that this VM would be trying to tell pieces of hardware to go to sleep. What would happen. I have the idea that each piece of hardware for the VM is virtualized to it can't acturally tell the real shared hardware to go into low power mode; but what exactly would happen. The virtual hard drive can't actually spin down and a resource slice of the processor and memory can't just go dark. I guess the OS could write the restore state to the drive. Anyway, just wondering what woudl actually happen and how both the host and the guest would react.
