When I tried to install the VMware Tools on

x64 Windows Server 2003 SP2 , the following error was logged in the event logs and the

VMware Tools failed to installed properly:

“Product: VMware Tools – Error 1722. There is a problem with

this Windows Installer packager. A program run as part of the setup did not

finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action

VM_RegisterVCBSnapshotProviderService, location:

C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSI67.temp, command: -register “C:\Program Files

(x86)\VMware\VMWare Tools\Drivers\vcc\VCBSnapshotProvider.dll” “VMware Snapshot

Provider” “vmvss” “VMware Snapshot Provider””

ESX/VC 3.5 Update 2 is the version that I am running. I never encountered such an issue before the upgrade.

Kindly let me know the cause of this error.

Same here.

The Distribution Transaction Coordinator service was set to Automatic, but failed to start with error code -1073737712.

The following KB from MS solved the issue:

In short: "msdtc -resetlog". Afterwards the problem went away.

Do make sure you stop anything that might be using the log, any databases, applications, whatever.

I just wanted to say that deleting the COM3 key and reinstalling worked for me.

Starting the services:

  • Distributed Transaction Coordinaton.

  • COM+ System Application.

resolved the issue for me too.

I had converted two physical servers that were originally in a cluster into VMware ESX 3.5 and ran into the error 1722 when trying to install VM Tools. The install would only fail when the Volume Shadow Copy Services Support option was selected to be installed under VMware Device Drivers. I believe this option requires the Distributed Transaction Coordinator service (MSDTC) to be running for the install to complete. I couldn't get MSDTC to start so I needed to remove the old cluster installation first because MSDTC was installed in the cluster.

The following is what resolved my problem with the error 1722:

  1. Remove old cluster installation:

    1. cluster /cluster:(cluster name) node (node name) /force

  2. Install MSDTC and start the service:

    1. msdtc -install

    2. net start msdtc

  3. Install VM Tools with no more errors

I get a error whwn install vCenter server on windwos 2008

Product: VMware vCenter Server -- Error 1722.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Hi,

In my case, the error 1722 on installation of VMware Tools was caused by Windows Management Instrumentation service that was stopped and disabled.

Setting it to Automatic and start I solved and installed VMware Tools successfully.

IN my case the error was caused by the not having network DTC access enabled.

Steps to enable network DTC access

  1. Click Start,
    point to
    Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove
    Programs
    .

  2. Click Add/Remove
    Windows
    Components
    .

  3. Select Application
    Server
    , and then click
    Details.

  4. Select Enable network DTC access, and
    then click OK.

  5. Click Next.

  6. Click Finish.

Hello Guys,

i had the same Problem. Nothing from the above was solving the Problem.

This worked for me:

Registering the DLL manually ends with error 0x80070005.

regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\Drivers\vss\VCBRequestor.dll"
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools\Drivers\vss\VCBSnapshotProvider.dll"

This an Permission-Problem. Check Registry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VCBRequestor.VmVssRequestor / HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VCBSnapshotProvider.VmSnapshotProvider and delete them.

If you cannot delete, change Userrights.

After that, try to register the DLL´s and re-run comreg.

You are the man!  I was unable to get the VMWare Tools installed on this VM and I needed to shrink one of the hard drives.  Thank you for posting this solution!
