Deploying a VM using template

I want to deploy a new VM using a template that I have, but I want the hard drive to be much smaller than that of the template's. Would there be an easy way to do this during the deploy process(I haven't deployed a VM in awhile)? We are running version 3.5 so I could deploy the VM and then resize the hard drive... any negatives to going that route?

I've done this in the past by deploying a VM from the template. After the new VM is created, then using the converter to V2V and change the drive size there.

I don't see any way to reduce the size of the drive by using deploy. I also cannot downsize the drive after creating the VM (I can only increase it). I am thinking of making the template a VM and then using converter to create a VM from it with a smaller drive... unless anyone knows a better way.
