I have software that backsup the entire OS, including system files etc. I want to be able to take the backup and create a VM from scratch but having difficulties pulling it off.
I have managed to get the files into a blank .vmdk, including ntldr, ntdetect and boot.ini, but when I boot up the VM, i get OS not found every time.
Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.
To me this looks like your backup software does not restore the master boot record correctly!?
What's the exact message you receive (maybe a screen shot can help).

Operating System Not Found.
I have also tried booting off XP disc and running Fixmbr.
Which backup software and which VMware product/version do you use?
Does the backup software provide a disaster recovery option (e.g. booting the restore agent from a CD/ISO?

I was able to fix it. I had to boot it with UBCD and use Diskpart to make the partition active.
