Converting a VM to a Template

Dear Team,

Need to know when converting a VM to a Template significantly fater than creating a clone  of the VM.what will be the reason.

Converting a VM to a template basically only renames the configuration file from .vmx to .vmtx. A clone on the other side copies the VM which certainly requires much more time to finish.
