Converted box will not boot

I converted a Windows Server 2003 box to VM. I thought I had checked to set it to LSILOGIC during the conversion. After tring to boot it and only getting a black screen and blinking cursor I went in and edited the 30kb vmdk file and found out the ddb adaptortype was set to "ide" so I changed it to "lsilogic" but the converted VM will still not boot and in the GUI of vSpehere it still shows the hard disk as IDE. Any suggestions?

Is this for ESX, ESXi, Workstation, Fusion, or Player?

In general you do not want to edit the vmx file directly unless you know how everything is connected. There may be some fix up in the actual VMDK metadata files as well.

Also, was the 2003 machine using IDE or SCSI before hand?

Sorry should have specified. It is ESXi on a single host. IT was orginally on a SCSI backplane before conversion. I followed a KB articale to change the adaptor type but that didnt help. Going to run  a fixmbr and fixboot from teh install disk using the reapir utility and see how that goes.

In order to use the disk as a SCSI disk you also need to attach it to a virtual SCSI controller. To do this, detach the disk from the VM (do not delete from disk) and re-attach it to a virtual Lsilogic SCSI controller. This can easily be done in the VM's settings.
