Convert Ubuntu Linux 7.10 from VMWare Server 1.x to ESX 3.5

A businesspartner has created me a ubuntu workstation vm on an vmware server 1.x . the vm has 13 gb on the hd. i copied the vm via folder upload on my esx and convert with the commandline "vmkfstool -i ...." to the now folder in the storage system. after finished the convert the new size of the vm has 60GB !!!!! why ? what´s wrong?

What was the size of the disk the o/s inside the vm reported - I will bet it was 60 GB with 16 GB in use - VMware server will store the virtual disk in compact format in other only taking up as much space as in use - when you moved it to ESX the format changed to normal or monolithic format - the vmdk file became the size of the disk 60 GB - this is normal

Hello,

Use VMware Converter to import the VM. Most likely he chose to make a 60GB drive but not to expand or use it all immediately. That is quite possible. If that is the case you can use VMware Converter to shrink the size of the disk during the migration. HOwever you may need to use VMware COnverter v4 to get that functionality with Linux.
