Cloning VM while running

Is there a way of cloning a VM while it's running? We have ESX 3.5 and VC 2.5. I would like to have a duplicate copy of our domain controller that has all of the FSMO roles and it's a VM. It seems the only way to do it is to turn off the VM and use the "Export" feature or the VMKFSTOOLs.

thanks.

Why not use a backup tool, such as vRanger to backup the VM (uses the snapshot capability) and then restore to a different datastore/vm name?

There is a trial period that would allow you to test this.

With virtual DC's for over 3 years now, I would highly recommend not cloning a DC.

You are better off building a new one, and promoting it.

Now, if you are using it only for Disaster Recovery purposes, keep in mind things like timing, dates, etc can be somewhat of a bear when standing up a DC that is not current.

I actually power down a DC VM nightly, and export the vmdk through a script, over to a Windows share for backup for this purpose.

It is somewhat of a last resort option, given our current DR strategy.

If I'm not mistaken, 3.5 Update 2 allows this feature.
