Check and upgrade Tools before each power on?

I've been playing with this setting and we have a large # of windows servers which sounds like a good idea. Does anyone have an positive or negative feedback regarding enabling this feature? Also, am I correct that the only way to enable this is to power down each VM and set it??? That seems counter-intuitive..

Last question, does automatic tools installation work with linux (suse/redhat)?

Thanks

I have never gotten the tools to install automatically in Linux. I've seen upgrades complete successfully, but never the initial install.

I haven't used the automatically update feature, and personally, would not use it. I like to be able to control what gets upgraded, and when it's upgraded. PowerShell allows me to upgrade, and you can schedule upgrades as well, if you wish to do so, but I, personally, don't like the idea of my vm's auto-updating.

In the past we've used our patching tool to upgrade the VMware tools, but I wouldn't mind having something more automatic. If I have to shut all the servers down to get to that automatic mode though, it's not very helpful.
