Cannot open file "C:\ProgramData\VMware\dndlogs\dndlog.conf": The system cannot find the path specified

Recently I upgraded my Vista Home Premium 64-bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

That in itself did not seem to mess anything up, and I was able to run my VM OK.

I am using VMWare Workstation 7.1.2 build-301548.

My VM runs the guest OS - Windows XP SP3 (32 bit).

Yesterday (for no apparent reason that I can remember) I suddenly found that inside of my VM, the network connection had "cable disconnected".

I could not connect it through VMWare Tools | Devices. I get the same message which also flashes (too quickly) on start up and also can be found in the vmware.log file:

vcpu-0| http://msg.dictionary.load.openFailed Cannot open file "C:\ProgramData\VMware\dndlogs\dndlog.conf": The system cannot find the path specified

vcpu-0| msg.vnet.connectvnet] Could not connect Ethernet0 to virtual network "VMnet8". More information can be found in the vmware.log file.

vcpu-0| http://msg.device.startdisconnected Virtual device Ethernet0 will start disconnected.

That happens regardless whether I choose Bridged, NAT or Custom.

I copied my VM to my laptop with the host OS being Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition Version 2003 SP 2 and the same version of my WMWare Workstation - and it works fine there.

I will appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks in advance

look in the workstation section - you are not alone and the same issue is being discussed there

Thanks for your answer, but it is a little bit to terse for me.

What do you mean "Look in the Workstation section"? A section in the vmx file? A section in the VMWare communities?

The links you provided are guides to the vmdk and vmx files.

Is solution to my problem there? If so, why does all work OK on my laptop? The vmx and vmdk files there are identical to those used on my desktop.

You mentioned "you are not alone there". I searched for similar problmems, but they are all closed (answered), and very criptic.

I certainly am quite computer literate, by the VM techology is at the fringe of my activities and often need more clue than what they provide.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Correct answer was provided by piggyz in another thread. The solution required opening the Virtual Network Editor from the Edit menu of the WMWare workstation and choosing "Restore Defaults". Great thanks to all who tried to help.

I am having the same issue, but haven't been able to resolve it using the instructions above. I do not have an Edit menu in my VMware workstation. I believe I am accessing the Virtual Network Editor (from Virtual Machine->Virtual Machine Settings...->Hardware->Network Adapter). However, there is no "Restore Defaults" option there.

I am using VMware 3.1.2 build-301548. This problem appeared after I upgraded from 3.1.1.

Are you using VMWare Workstation or Player?

If VMWare Workstation then what version?

There is no "Edit" menu in the Player. There is one in the Workstation.

the answer from piggyz in that other post is completely unrelated to this problem.

the missing dndlog.conf message is completely harmless - the problem is that it only appears when a completely unrelated but serious problem occurs.

To get rid of that irritating message simply create the file
C:\ProgramData\VMware\dndlogs\dndlog.conf
yourself.

But this will not fix the real problem
