COM port In use

Hello -

I have a server that I would like to Migrate that has a COM Port that is being used to monitor a UPS. This is the first server I have thought of migrating with a COM port mapping. Will this work? Is it possible for me to hook up the serial cable to the COM Port on the ESX host and Migrate this device? I realize that it wouldn't work well in a failover situation, because i would have to move the serial connection to the other server in the event of a failover, but I'm curious if this type of migration is even possible.

ESX version will be 3.5 u1 running on Dell PE 2950s

Thanks,

As far as I understand it, you cannot migrate a VM if the serial port is configured as "on" in the VM settings.

i.e. if its configured to use a physical port or a file/pipe.

So even if the actual physical device is disconnected, you will still have to disable the COM port in the VM settings.

This means that you will have to edit the settings of the VM before migrating the VM, then edit it once more after the migration has completed.

.

I believe there are various products on the market that allow you to access serial/usb/parallel devices over ethernet.

Such a setup would allow migrations without any manual intervention.

Yes this will work but as you rightly said it may be a problem if your VM gets transfered to another host so I would ammend the DRS settings for this machine so it doesnt move, this will obviously mean that if the host fails this particular VM will too but at least you will have an extra host in your cluster !
