Best practice for VM guest data drive space?

Best Practice for File server storage
We have been debating best practice for how to mount storage for a file server to one of our VM guests.  We are debating two scenarios:
For a VM guest host (file server) we could do one of the following:

1. Use VMware to allocate additonal drive space from VMware's partioned SAN.
2. Create an iSCSI adaptor in the guest host that links directdly to a SAN storage that can be formated directly by the native OS.

Can anyone speak to the pros and cons of either method (perhaps best practice)?  The server manager believess if we do option 2, it would allow other guest hosts to access the same partioned SAN space if using the same OS.
Do a number of you assign additional space to VMguests via a direct SAN connection as opposed to virtual drive space assigned via VMware?  If so, why? what benefit?
