Do you need a 64 bit ESX server in order to create a 64 bit VM?
You can but you will need to enable VT technology in the bios of the host (if it supports it)
No, ESX is the Hypervisor which doesn't need to have 64 bit when the guest may be 64 bit. You need to enable Intel VT in the host BIOS. Cold boot the system after doing so.
In addition you can download a free 64 Bit test utility from VMware: http://download3.vmware.com/software/vi/VMware-CPU-Compatibility-e.x.p-160658.zip

No you need a 64bit server, however depending on Chipset, ie Intel or AMD, certain other proviso are required, for example to run 64Bit guest on ESX you need a AMD Athlon Rev E or Greater. for Intel Chips you need the Physical Hosts Bios to support VT Extension (or EM64) and for it to be enabled.

I thought he's talking about ESX, not the hardware....then you're right, you need a 64 bit host hardware.
