xubuntu

ok i'm new to this and there is probably a simple solution to my problem. i have the vm player installed, downloaded xubuntu decompressed it and started vm player, loaded xubuntu file and everything goes fine until it asks for login and password. i have tried user for login, then password comes up but i can't type anything, if i hit enter and then start typing it says login incorrect. i have tried every name on the planet but it still says incorrect login. you would think there would be a simple way around this but i can't figure it out, any help would sure be appreciated. thanks jay

Where'd you get the VM from? Wherever you downloaded it from, was there any instructions - either in the text of that page, or a separate document?

Well, if you hit enter, you've entered a blank as the password. Realize that on *nix systems, you will NOT see the cursor moving when entering a password field. If you typed "user" and saw it, and hit enter, and then the prompt came for password, then your keyboard is working. At that point, just type "password" and then hit enter (no quotes of course).

That's your shell / command prompt. It means you've successfully logged into the machine (xubuntu) as user (user). Welcome to the wonderful (and oh so user-friendly) world of Linux! Hint: try typing startx.

You're welcome. Glad I was helpful.

It'd probably be a good idea to pick up a cheap book on Linux basics. I just picked up the "Linux: In Easy Steps" from my local Barnes & Noble for $10. Might help the initial barrage of questions you're going to have.
