This is a great appliance for testing firewall/port requirements between the machines in a multi-tiered solution. The bandwidth throttling feature is nice to model distributed, multi-tiered solutons for production or DR.

Simple, clean interface -- and the CD version will run seamlessly on ESX.

M0n0wall is my favourite as it's very compact, easy to install and configure (especially with this applicance.)

This applicance only gets 4 *'s as it does not have the VMX Linux drivers installed so you only get 10Mb throughput with the AMD NIC.

Pitty it and the tools weren't added in for the contest as it's an obvious addition that would make it a winner. Smiley Sad

Having a 10Mb virtual NIC does NOT mean that you're limited to 10Mb. The 10Mb card is after all virtual and the OS might think it's 10Mb, but it's not. The speed depends on the cpu power of the host machine and also the physical nic if one is connected to the virtual switch in question.

I thought the AMD NIC was limited to 10Mb and the VMxNic would run as fast as it could (100Mb+).

That's a very common misunderstanding. Both alternatives will run as fast as possible, but vmxnet is optimised for virtualization and will usually have better performance than vlance.

However, there are certain setups where vlance is the prefered choice, such as in citrix installs.

vmxnet also support TSO[/url] and is normally the prefered choice.
