devices in windows vs linux

I am building an application that communicates using serial port. My devel. platform is linux.

I made a beta test using vmware player in windows enviroment. It did not recognize

my serial port /dev/ttyS0. What is that port in windows environment and do I have

to create two images one for linux and other for windows? I guess that the same problem

is in other /dev/.... devices.

Have you tried setting the serial port to "auto detect"? This should select the appropriate serial port (also floppy, parallel, cd-rom devices support this), and is platform-agnostic.

Which serial port it would autodetect? My device or some other connected serial

device?

I guess there must be something like this in my instructions:

This is not a clean solution, but when dealing with devices connected to computers

those devices can be connected in many ways (directly into serial ports using cable

and sometimes using infrared or both).

My application needs one unused serial port - enduser may already use another port for

something else. Wmware needs to know exactly which port to use.
