Frantic,

Since you're mentioning Windows XP I suppose you're focusing on the NTDETECT failed problem, right?

Please retry and review the contents of the /var/log/messages, (paste the proper timeframe in a reply to let me review). Also show me your '/etc/dhcpd.conf' and 'ifconfig -a' output and /var/log/binlserver.log for the proper timeframe...

Frantic, Pulse, Everyone else

Windows XP deployment has a bug in version 1.0. I've put together a version 1.1b, which should not have the bug and has some more extra features:

\* It should now support other network cards for windows (1.0 version only supported VMWare NIC's)

\* It now supports other OS-es (ubuntu 6.06 server, Suse 10.1 , solaris10(experimental), bartpe (based on win2k3))

\* Template configuration files are now copied automatically and can be edited afterwards.

\* Lots of bug fixes and small features

Get the upgrade at:

http://ch.twi.tudelft.nl/~carl/uda11b.tar

then do the following:

\* log in as root on the UDA

\* copy the file uda11b.tar to /tmp

mkdir /tmp/uda11

cd /tmp/uda11

tar -xvf /tmp/uda11b.tar

chmod 755 upgrade11.sh

./upgrade11.sh

Let me know it it worked for you!

Hi,

This is probably obvious to most guys, but once you've connected to http://10.0.0.104 and are looking to mount the shared drive (http://10.0.0.104/cgi-bin/uda.pl?action=newmount) the username and password you have to put in to connect to the UDA is the Apache user and password, which is admin, admin and NOT the UDA root username and password.

Hope this helps.

Doh -

So close, and yet so far Smiley Sad

It all worked this time, got me to the Windows Setup screen.. until:

The operating system image you selected does not contain the necessary drivers for your network adapter.

So.. is it a Linux NIC driver I'm missing? Or a Windows one? If I can find one, where would I put it? The laptop in question is a Toshiba Portege R100.

I can almost taste it working Smiley Happy Any help is again greatly appreciated dude

Pulse,

I've looked into your problem and it seems your R100 has a Intel pro/100 VE network adapter according to this page:

http://www.freed.net/opensource/R100.html

It should work with ris, but with some adjustments according to this page:

http://www.support-netz.de/wml-ris-install100ve.html

If I were you I would try the following:

1. Download the drivers from this page:

Windows* 2000, XP, and Server 2003 Network Adapter Driver Set[/url]

2. Unzip (or execute) the downloaded file to c:\intel10.3 (default)

3. Copy the file C:\Intel10.3\PRO100\WS03XP2K\E100b325.inf to the /var/public/tftproot/WINXP_INF directory in your UDA.

4. Copy the files C:\Intel10.3\PRO100\WS03XP2K\e100b325.sys and C:\Intel10.3\PRO100\WS03XP2K\e100bnt5.sys to the /var/public/tftroot/WINXP_SYS directory on the UDA

5. Recreate the binl cache:

/etc/init.d/binl stop

/var/public/cgi-bin/infparser.py

/etc/init.d/binl start

6. Retry the RIS installation with your laptop

If things do not work out:

1. Check your /var/log/binlserver.log to check that more drivers have been loaded than previously and see if the binlserver correctly handles the binl request made by your laptop and hands the name of a .sys file in response.

2. Check the /var/log/messages to see what .sys file is requested and if the sys file is where it is supposed to be in your UDA. (tftp is case-sensitive!)

3. Paste the proper timeframes of your logfines in this forum...

Good luck!

Dude, you are nothing short of a LEGEND[/b]!

I currently have a successfully installing Windows XP laptop beside me. I'd installed Fedora yesterday on it but I really did want Windows.

Anything from here I'm sure I can find drivers for, but seriously you're a champ. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all your help.

Good luck finding your rug Smiley Happy

Install has just finished - awesome Smiley Happy

Oh yeah, and about the XP iso not showing up in the drop down menu - I was running Firefox. When I used IE it worked, so I can only assume you were right about javascript not being enabled.

Thanks again!

Were can I download Ultimate Deployment Appliance? I

can only find links for the 1.1b update.

On the page at:

http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/232

First you need to be logged in. The login link is in the upper right corner. If you already logged in, then click Refresh in your browser until it says "Welcome, \[your username]." At that point, there will be a download link below the Welcome message.

Again, the download link will not appear until after you are logged in and[/b] the page has recognized that you are logged in.

I can't download the file! It seems to be a problem with vmware's torrent tracker, and not with my setup, because my setup works with other files. Also, if you search the forums for "torrent", you'll see that I'm not the only person having problems with vmware's torrent "solution".

Could you please host the file via ftp somewhere? If you don't have the bandwidth to spare, maybe you could create another torrent for the file that uses a different tracker?

Thanks in advance

Kenny,

I don't have the UDA, but maybe I can prove of some help.

To get the file, you could always just email it to yourself, and retrieve it from inside the UDA. The more direct thing to do would have been to move it into a folder that you share with the virtual machine, but since VMware tools isn't installed, you probably can't have a shared folder.

The syntax of the linux copy command, "cp", is "cp ".

To change the root password, login as root by typing "sudo su" (if you're not already root). Then type "passwd" to change your password.

Hope this helps.

Anybody here?

Has anybody had any luck recently downloading the file for the UDA? If so, how? I would really appreciate some help.

To be honest I have never downloaded it, but I have uploaded it to vmware in the first place. Moreover I have never used torrents before, but I saw that there is another torrent available, maybe you have more luck using that one:

http://www.linuxtracker.org/torrents-details.php?id=2316

If anybody knows of a good online storage site I can upload it there if you want. It's about 1500 Mb (I'm working on downsizing it to 500Mb or less, but I have little time at hand lately)

What I usually do to copy files from my windows machine to the UDA is use pscp.exe from the putty download page:

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html

Download it and (on your windows machine) do:

pscp.exe -pw test c:\temp\uda11b.tar root@10.0.0.140:/tmp

The torrent on LinuxTracker uses the same tracker as the one downloadable via the VMware site. So I think it's just the same file at a different location.

Everyone,

I've made a smaller version of the UDA based on Fedora Core 5. It's 260 Mb, so download should be fairly easy compared to the 1.5 Gb it used to be.... Please check out the following link.

http://www.uploading.com/files/ZMQLMBTP/uda12.zip.html

Downloading the file takes some careful reading (it takes a few steps to get to the actual download) Skip through the adds, and download the file...

Just in case you don't trust the download service: here's the MD5 hash of my original file:

8cb6bedd68a3c9c1a4c9fead9ceaa55c

It was generated with the MD5 hash tool for windows on:

http://www.pc-tools.net/win32/md5sums/

Hope this helps...

By the way: if you know of a good place to host the UDA on the web let me know...
