Countdown to the May 26 deadline!

From the VMTN Blog http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/blog/2006/05/#uvac_countdown

The Countdown Begins

There are fewer than 10 days left until the
Ultimate Virtual
Appliance Challenge
deadline: May 26, 2006. It's not too late to
assemble the world's most innovative virtual appliance. We're seeing lots of
good entries, but you can still enter, and I guarantee that your chances are
better than the state lottery. I'm serious that it's not too late -- most
of the appliances are being crafted by combining open source components and
packages and operating systems in clever ways. Fit & finish are important
to the Challenge, but unique value and innovative use of virtualization are
75% of the judging criteria.

So if you still have that great idea kicking around that makes +virtual

better than real+, 9 days is more than enough to pull it together. Your

car doesn't need to be washed this weekend. The beach will wait. Your kid's

volleyball game -- OK, go to that, but then come home and get back to work on your

appliance.

See the Challenge submission instructions for more information.

Our ftp servers are standing by to receive your files by May 26. You'll
be doing yourself a favor if you submit it before Friday the 26th, since
you'll be fighting everyone else uploading at the same time, but I don't
want to nag, so just make sure you give yourself enough time.
If uploading a gigabyte virtual appliance file is going to interfere with
uploading your latest
lipsync video to YouTube, you can burn it on a DVD and overnight it to us.

Hello John Troyer.

You are a fortune-teller. In my case, the time won me. I will finish my appliance the next Monday. It has more than 1 GB. I am thinking how to send the compressed file?

I have a dial-up connection and it is very slow to send 1 GB. file to the FTP server. Probably, I will get other better connection but I do not know yet.

How many time is necessary to send 1 GB. file to the VMware FTP server?

What type of Internet connection is the best?

I have heard that Internet II is faster. Would I send the file by the Internet II connection. What time would it take?

I live in Mexico City and I am thinking about how to send a DVD with the file.

Would I send a DVD with the file by airmail to the VMware office?

Which is the mail address to send a DVD to the VMware Ultimate Virtual Appliance Challenge?

Note:I have other doubt. My appliance is with Linux Ubuntu 5.1.

Would you recommend me the best type of compressed file to send the appliance file?

Thanks in advance

cruzc.

You can express one or two-day mail the appliance to VMware using DHL or another international carrier. The address and other details can be found at http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/challenge_upload_instructions

bz2 is better than most at compressing appliances.

The countdown timer on the main page looks like it assumes we're on the West coast -- out here in EDT it's telling me there's less than two days, but there should be just over that for my time zone! And shouldn't the deadline be in PDT, not PST, or does VMware not go by daylight savings time?

The countdown timer is indeed misleading as it's taking the time zone of the local computer into account.

I guess a lot of people might get somewhat confuzed by this.
