what is VMware Administrator daily tasks?

Hi

so I'm fresh graduate with  VCP-DCV certification , and I got a job as system engineer. the company that I will be working for is a contractor company that provides VMware solutions to other companies, banks , universities ... etc

I was wondering what would be my daily tasks like? Do I need to know everything I learned in VCP ?

I'm really scared because its my first job ever and I don't want to blow it!

thank you

First things first, take it easy.

If you don't have any prior VMware experience, then nobody is going to expect you to know everything. Having passed VCP, you are expected to know in general what is vSphere, vSAN etc. You should try to listen to your colleges as much as possible and try to understand the environment in which you are going to work first before attempting any changes, individual projects etc.

The daily tasks of a VMware administrator vary greatly depending on the environment, the existing third-party solutions and the skill-set of the support/management team. When I first started working with VMware, my daily tasks were not event VMware related! I was mainly responsible for checking vROPS alerts and making sure all the backups finished successfully previous night.

If you are unsure what your daily tasks should be, I suggest the first thing you should do is speaking to your direct supervisor- be it a manager or a senior specialist. If you haven't lied on your CV, they should expect you to be a little bit lost at first. Don't worry, we've all been there and you too are going to be just fine.

Let me know if you'd have any further questions

Exactly what Paul said. Relax, take a deep breath, and realize they wouldn't have hired you if they didn't think you could do the job. You'll do just fine. Smiley Happy

Every environment is different, so you'll never have an exact set of tasks to follow for working with/on them. Customers can sometimes be a bit demanding, or have crazy requests, or have outlandish setups that you'll need to deal with. The best thing you can do is to take it calmly, do your best, and ask your colleagues/boss if you have ANY questions. It's better to ask a question than to make a decision that ends up backfiring, and even then, having things backfire on you is the best way to learn new skills!

Come here with your questions - we are a very active forum and I've seen more than enough helpful people on here. There are no 'silly' questions, because we all have to start somewhere.

Good luck, and let us know if you need any help.

As an IT professional for over 30 years, every IT administrator has the same three basic job duties.

1) Make sure it is accessible to those who need it.

2) Make sure it is not accessible to those who don't.

3) Make sure it's backed up.

That being said, a well-running, backup-performing VMWare cluster shouldn't take much babysitting.  Smiley Happy
