Hi @Iwawa,

I suggest you try and read the following posts and documentation from VMware:

These should get you started! It's very easy to create a VMkernel interface that has vMotion enabled. You should be aware of the network and host requirements, so that vMotion functions like it should.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi,

if you are interested in vMotion architecture to be able to understand what is behind, I encourage you to see these videos.

Thank You to all for reply.

All these materials will surely be useful, but I have a doubt about the network configuration for vMotion.

I have a three node esxi  cluster;  do i need to create a vmkernel port on each esxi node and enable it for vmotion?

If yes,  is it correct to give a different IP address to each vmkernel port? for example 192.174.10.1 - 192.174.10.2 - 192.174.10.3

Thank You and Best Regards

Hi @Iwawa,

You can create a new VMkernel adapter on each ESXi host and enable it with vMotion, and give it a different IP on each host if you want. This is fully possible.

You can also just enable vMotion on the MGMT VMkernel (which you already have). This is the easiest method. You don't need additional IP's for this.

I hope this helped. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi,

yes, it is a good idea to create a dedicated vmkernel port on each ESXi host and enable it for vMotion. Yes, you have to assigne a unique IP address to it on each host.

Thank You,

Another question;  can it be useful to create a vmkernel port with two NICs (the second as uplink)?

A VMkernel port doesn't have an uplink. These would be provided by the vSwitch,dvSwitch, Portgroup settings. But yes you can add more than 1 uplink to it. Unless you are doing complex loadbalancing or vMotion network seperations, I would just leave it at default and use the vSwitch/dvSwitch/Portgroup settings.

Of course. See the link to Nils's content I sent to you. He explains how to speed up the migration process with multiple vSS/vDS uplinks.
