vCenter patch level vs. ESXi patch level

When vCenter server is on say 7.0.3g and the host is on 7.0.3i is that an issue. I've always made sure that vCenter was on a major version 7.0.3 before upgrading ESXi to 7.x but wasn't sure if minor patch releases updated on vCenter first.

Right now ESXi is on 7.0.3f and vCenter is on 7.0.3g, if I want to upgrade ESXi to 7.0.3g (which came out a few months after vCenter 3g does vCenter first need to be on it's latest patch version (3h which came out after ESXi 3g) first or does that not matter as long as the major versions match?

I would hope that update manager in VC would not let you update hosts beyond the level supported by the current version of VC itself.

We don't use update manager normally, so can't try it I'm afraid.
