resetting a lost root password

i have a couple hosts that i need to get into where the root logon has been lost.

i have followed a couple articles which say join the host to the Active directory domain and then login using AD account in the "ESX Admins" group

this does not work - i still get incorrect username/password

is there any reason this would not work? did i miss something ? any help is appreciated.

The only way short of reloading it is to use a host profile to reset the password. That obviously has some requirements.
