can't deploy a OVA directly to vSPhere

I need to deploy a VM directly to a host to attempt to resolve a checksum issue with the OVA.   However, when doing so, I am getting an error message:

Failed - Access to resource settings on the host is restricted to the server that is managing it

Yes, my host is connected to vCenter, it uses NSX with distributed switching. 

I would love to understand when it is all of the sudden you can't manage a host directly that is connected to vCenter...
