best practice creating MS SQL server guest

Sorry for a noobie question, but I am trying to find out the recommended way for MS SQL server guests to be created.  Our server group uses one configuration for all Windows servers regardless of use.  I can't imagine that there aren't nuances in configurations between file servers, DB servers, Web servers, etc... beyond CPU, RAM and Disk.

Any guidance would be helpful.

This is a subject for quite a bit of discussion and debate. A great start is the book Virtualizing SQL Server with VMware as it contains a wealth of information.
