Will MAC address change if i copy the VM from Esxi 6 to 6.5?

Hi All,

I have to copy a Vm from Esxi 6.0 Server 1 Datastore to Esxi 6.5 Server 2 Datastore. Currently the MAC is autoassigned.

Will this procedure change the MAC address of the VM? If yes, then can i change it back to Original MAC by Editing VMX file?

Thanks

Vishal

Hi,

It doesn't change the "mac address" when you import it on version 6.5

Because you want to move the VM, it never change the initial MAC address that is mentioned in the .vmx file of your machine (configuration file of that VM). If you edit related that vmx file, you can see this line: (ethernet0.generatedAddress). It has been started like 00:0C:29 or 00:50:56.

In some cases, for example if you copy that VM, when you try to power-on the machine, as you maybe saw it will ask you Copy or Move? because the destination host needs to know about to change the dedicated unique specifications to avoid duplication or conflict problems.
